Your purpose in life (SSN)

What is our purpose in life? … who the hell knows?! As I mention in Unscribbling:
Personally, I have a theory, that perhaps instead of one pat reason for our existence in this life, we are actually here to:
•fulfill a role within the greater whole
•to grow as an individual through our experiences
•to enjoy life

Instead of me babbling, let’s see what some bigger brains than mine say about this….

Point number one: Fulfilling a role in the greater whole…

Regarding the teaching of Confucius: “His major concerns were with stimulating individuals toward having the courage to be themselves and gain the wisdom to be an active part of the society in which they lived. In fact, the purpose of all self-actualization, according to Confucius, was to help us discover our part in the process of ordering and harmonizing with the world.”
– Leo F. Buscaglia, Ph.D. in Personhood

————————————————————————

” You are a whole person in a whole Universe. You are an individualize expression of the creative flow. There is something you can do that no one can do quite as uniquely as you. Somewhere there is a need for that special contribution. You are needed even as you have a need.”
– Eric Butterworth, Spiritual Economics

————————————————————————

” Your purpose can be as simple as smiling at the next stranger who comes along or being a friend in a time of need. The important thing to remember is to shine your light on a daily basis in the way that only you can. When you set that intention, you will find that you do not need to go out and find places to serve – opportunities to serve will present themselves to you with ease and grace. Serving your purpose brings joy. Joy brings gratitude. Gratitude is the creative energy that creates more opportunities for you to be grateful. It expands your ability to serve your purpose.”
– Science of Mind Magazine, August 2010 Eugene D. Holden

“…each soul has a mission that includes the dimension of service. Spiritual evolution for humanity is a collective proposition. One reading put it bluntly, ‘You’ll not be in heaven if you’re not leaning on the arm of someone you have helped’ (no. 3352-1).

This polarity is a key to Cayce theory of the meaning of life: the inner work of self-realization on one side and compassionate service on the other. An aspect of your soul’s mission is the inner discovery process of finding you genuine, spiritual identity. And equally important, your mission and calling is to share your gifts and talents with others so tat they too can fulfill their purposes. ”

“Life has meaning because it gives you the chance to discover your true nature and to grow closer to a full companionship with God.”

“This is the meaning of life: we are in the process of becoming conscious, cocreative companions with God. The blossoming of our real nature may still be far off, but we can do things each and every day that take us a step in that direction. The purpose of life we all share is making the infinite finite – bringing spiritual qualities into individual expression.”
Mark Thurston, Pd. D., Soul Purpose: Discovering and Fulfilling Your Destiny (An Edgar Cayce Guide)

Point number 2: To grow as an individual through our experiences…

“Life is a continuous journey of evolving and expanding. See it as it is, accept and forgive, and know that new consciousness creates new images, which creates new lives.”
Science of Mind Magazine, Sept 2010 Barbara Leger

————————————————————————

“Two of our main goals during our lifetime are redemption and inner peace. By redemption I mean freedom. Redemption implies the overcoming of karma, through our actions and though grace… Redemption is a gradual process, inexorably leading us to our spiritual home. Once liberated, the soul may choose to return to the physical plane in order to help others along the pathway to redemption. Redemption comes from love, not suffering. When our hearts overflow with love and our love flows to the others, we are in the process of redemption. We are fulfilling and canceling our karmic debts. We are being drawn back to the bosom of God, who is ultimate love.

Achieving inner peace alone is not enough… To be living in a physical world requires physical actions: to reach out to others in order to relieve their suffering and help them along their path; to be empathetic and compassionate; to help heal the planet, its inhabitants, and its structures; to teach as well as to learn.

If you engaged in this process, you will gain inner peace – even if you haven’t a spare moment to spend in a cave.”

Messages for the Masters, Brian Weiss, M.D. p. 137-138

Point number 3: to enjoy life…

Ok, my 2 cents – God does not want you to suffer. Period! If you think he does then I HIGHLY recommend that you read “How to Know God” by Deepak Chopra.

God LOVES us. Why would he want us to suffer?

“The meaning of life, then, is to LIVE it. To BE here. To follow our hearts. Nothing HAS to happen, and there is no one we’re SUPPOSED to be other than ourselves. There’s nothing we are SUPPOSED to do and no one who needs saving.”
“Manifesting Change” By Mike Dooley

And another great Mike Dooley statement (Oh man, do I love this guys thoughts!)…

“You came here to be happy, to learn and grow, and to thrive, and it’s your prerogative to meet these ends any way that you want… You’re not here to save the world. In fact, even if that were what you most wanted to do, the very best way to approach it would be to follow your heart and find your own happiness.”
“Manifesting Change” By Mike Dooley

————————————————————————

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out and eagerly without fear for newer and richer experience.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt

And if you think all of the above is hogwash…

“For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather specific meaning of a person’s life as a given moment.”
– Viktor Frankl “Man’s Search for Meaning”

And in that case, I choose to believe that we are here to:
•fulfill a role within the greater whole
•to grow as an individual through our experiences
•to enjoy life

That is my choice. That is what feels right in my heart. Follow what feels right in your heart.

But remember, ultimately…

“Your life is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God.”
– Eric Butterworth, Spiritual Economics

Takeaway: The ultimate purpose you assign to life is your choosing. For me, I feel my purpose is to: fulfill a role within the greater whole, to grow as an individual through our experiences, and to enjoy life.
